They loved watching Jesus heal the sick and feed crowds, treating Him like a traveling show. Jesus rebuked them because the true purpose of a miracle is to serve as a signpost pointing to the need for metanoia (a radical, total change of mind and heart). They wanted the benefits of His power without the surrender of repentance.
Tim Trainor’s reflections: He said to him, “Follow me.” And leaving everything behind, he got up and followed him. (Luke 5:27)

They should have known better in their judgment of Jesus
